New for March 2000
The March 7, 2000 election is the first presidential primary conducted under the Open Primary rules adopted by voters through Proposition 198 in 1996.

Because the national political parties have rules prohibiting states from using an open primary for the presidential nominating process, California will be tabulating the votes for president in two ways.

Presidential Summary Results
The official result is the Open Primary result. This count provides the total number of votes received by each candidate, regardless of the voters' political party. The parties will be using the "Delegate Selection Vote" to award delegates to the national nominating conventions.

This count will include the votes cast for candidates of each party by the voters registered from that same political party only.

Cross Party Voting
The other count listed on this web site is the "Crossover Vote." This count will show how voters who chose to vote for presidential candidates outside their own political party cast their ballots.

If you have additional questions, please refer to page 87 of your Voter Information Guide.
